"I was in good hands"

About: Ayrshire & Arran Community Services / HARP (Heart and Respiratory Patients) Ayrshire Central Hospital / Stroke and Rehab

(as the patient),

I have recently completed a course with the HARP in Ardrossan, Ayrshire.  I was referred by the hospital Stroke Clinic after having a series of TIAs (mini strokes) with resultant carotid artery surgery on both sides.  I was slightly concerned about going at first, as I felt that perhaps the exercises would be beyond my capabilities, but even on my first day, I knew I was in good hands. I found the classes to be very uplifting, motivating and educational, as well as being very friendly.  The classes were pitched exactly as they should be for the participants, at all levels.

It has encouraged me to want to continue with exercise in order to get back to full fitness. A big 'Thank You' to everyone involved with this Programme, especially to Aileen, Barbara, Lorna and Jane and the volunteers, Barbara and John and the KA Leisure people.

I enjoyed the classes and derived a great deal of confidence and mental help from the participants and, because of my experiences at the classes, have put my name forward as a potential volunteer when a post becomes available.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Grateful member,

It is lovely to hear how helpful the whole experience has been. I think this is absolutely wonderful. Not only are you getting better, healthier and fitter, other people will benefit when you help out with the classes. A real win: win for everyone. Thank you so much for taking time to share this with us. I will pass this onto the teams and I am sure they will be delighted to read how beneficial you have found this.

All the best for your onward recovery and in your future volunteering role,

best wishes,

Eunice
