After a couple of falls necessitating the assistance of the emergency services I was referred to the Bromley Falls and Fracture Centre.
A wonderful physiotherapist, Laura, after an extensive consultation and numerous tests, diagnosed me with visual vertigo.
For many years, since childhood in fact, I had had balance problems and other symptoms which general practitioners, neurologists, psychiatrists and other specialists were unable to diagnose, with the result that for 76 years I have believed myself to be neurotic. The symptoms have affected most aspects of my daily life and are debilitating beyond belief. Because there is no visible difficulty for others to see, there is little sympathy, meaning that at times one feels isolated, foolish and depressed.
Laura has changed all that. Words cannot explain the relief, happiness and euphoria, when, within less than an hour she had diagnosed this medical condition and told me that it is the functional arm, not the phsychological, of the condition.
Laura’s patient, knowledgeable and friendly approach, coupled with her instruction and guidance in eye, head and balance exercises, has, in under four months, improved my balance and self confidence to such an extent that I can now do many things I could not do before and that I was ashamed of admitting I could not do. I can also now tell people, without shame or embarrassment, those things that my condition still does not allow me to do.So, to Laura, and of course, the Bromley Falls and Fracture Centre, my heartfelt appreciation and thanks for making such a wonderful change to my life. I shall never forget it.
