Arrived by ambulance and waited for 4 hours to be given any pain relief and i only received this because i insisted. I gave a urine sample soon after arrival which was never taken. I was advised approximately 3 hours later to give a new sample directly to a nurse by a doctor. When i did go to a nurse to do this she advised me to keep it at the bedside. I told the nurse what the doctor had said and she responded "You need to wait, I'm very busy". Her response and tone was very sharp. A phlebotomy nurse took 5 attempts to canulate me. Eventually she canulated my hand. Afterwards when i asked the same lady why it was hurting and swelled compared to my other hand and if she could she take another look she rudely responded "can i put down what im doing and wash my hands first?" Her sharp response and tone was unnessacery .The doctor was very good with me and i can't fault her. But the supporting staff (nurses and health care assistants) need additional training on appropriate bedside manner. I can appreciate that the hospital is busy on a Saturday night but not all patients are alcoholics wanting a bed for the night. I think that this should be taken into consideration. I have worked in the medical sector for a number of years now. Being busy does not mean that you can forget basic bedside manners. Completely unacceptable.
