I attended an Infant Feeding Workshop at Hunter Health Centre in East Kilbride today. The main speaker at the workshop was called Laura (I think) from the infant feeding team at Wishaw Hospital and the other was a health visitor I think. I found the workshop extremely helpful even though I'm a 2nd time mum. I never managed to get my 1st baby latched on and spent 11 months expressing breastmilk for him which was very mentally and physically challenging. This time round I am really hoping I can get this baby to latch on. The workshop addressed a variety of topics including breastfeeding and overcoming challenges and providing a realistic expectation of what it involves. I attended a class at Ayrshire Maternity Unit a couple of years ago that made breastfeeding sound very easy and natural and didn't prepare me for some of the hurdles I may face. Although this workshop today didn't go in to a lot of detail on the problems you can experience, it was highlighted that it may not be plain sailing and I feel this prepares you a little more mentally for the challenges breastfeeding may bring and make you more determined to carry on with breastfeeding instead of giving up.
