My husband took ill at home and unfortunately I didn’t realise how ill he was. I phoned NHS 111 who sent an ambulance and the 2 female paramedics realised immediately how ill my husband was. They explained that my husband would be taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and I was horrified as I’d had a dreadful experience in that hospital A & E and the wards when I had Pancreatitis due to gallbladder complications. I was informed that it was the nearest as they obviously realised how serious the situation was.
We arrived at A& E and my husband was immediately surrounded by staff. The consultants and staff were fantastic and kept me up to date every 15 minutes or so. The consultant surgeons explained that my husband had Boerhaave’s Syndrome and although I didn’t understand what this condition was, their explanation was clear and precise and I was informed that if my husband had the surgery he may die, but if he didn’t have the surgery he would certainly die. The surgery was successful and my husband was transferred to ICU and put on a ventilator. He was in ICU for 10 days but unfortunately died of Septic Shock.
The standard of care in ICU was excellent and the nursing staff, doctors and consultants updated me every visit, treated me but more so my husband, with empathy and compassion and their clinical skills were second to none. I would like to thank EVERYONE involved in my husbands treatment for the wonderful fight they put up to save him but alas it was not to be. I feel that my own experience was awful when I was ill in the same hospital but maybe this will reassure people that when a Life is in the balance the Triage system now makes complete sense that those who are dying will get the best treatment with no skill or expense spared and the skills involved were first class.
Thank you all you truly were magnificent!
