"My mothers last few days in Kelso Community Hospital"

About: Kelso Hospital / Day Hospital

(as a relative),

My mother was admitted with terminal cancer, and died after a two week stay on the ward.

She was looked after by her GP, and a very well staffed group of nurses and HCAs. She was kept very comfortable. I have experience of working on the wards in a London DGH, and I found the care given to my mother to be of a very high quality indeed. The nurses were all very experienced, friendly and caring. The ward Sisters were also of a very high standard, with an air of complete confidence in their abilities, and those of their team. The ward was kept near, tidy and clean. It had an air of calmness about it which was much appreciated.

As relatives my medical wife and I were treated with great professionalism at all times, and communication was always kind and helpful.

My mother could not have received better care anywhere else that I have worked in the NHS.

The team deserve to be congratulated for their work, and have a great big thank you from me.

Thank you very much for your kind words. Your mother was an absolute pleasure to look after. The team and I are very proud of our palliative care and continually strive to do the best for our patients and families. I will ensure I pass on your fantastic feedback to all the team, who I'm sure will be thrilled.

We wish you all the very best.

Kind Regards

Andrea

Dear Consultant Surgeon,

I am not involved in the delivery of care at Kelso Community Hospital but receive and read all Care Opinion stories in relation to NHS Borders! After reading your story about your mother's care I felt compelled to reply to say thank you, for taking the time at what must be an incredibly difficult period for you as a family, following the loss of your mother.

As a fellow healthcare professional, it is incredibly difficult being "on the other side" and we can all only hope that the care that our loved ones receive in hospital, meets the standards of care that we try to deliver to other peoples' loved ones on a daily basis. I am so glad that your mother's care meant that her death was peaceful and dignified and in a setting where her loved ones could be with her. I'm also delighted that you and your wife felt well cared for, as care of relatives in a palliative care situation is exceptionally important.

Thank you for sharing your mother's story and for telling us of your experiences. I will make sure that the nursing and medical staff at Kelso receive this amazing feedback, which I have no doubt will raise morale and help them to realise what an amazing job they do!

With best wishes,

Lynn
