My son (11) has struggled and been in pain for almost two years with ingrown toenails.
It was very difficult to find a suitable referral route as this is more common in adults and therefore treated under a local anaesthetic.
This was never an option and as a result we have been back and forth to both GP and even a trip to A&E for washout out pus behind the nail bed.
Our GP struggled to find the right referral option and at one point we waited for a response from Choose and Book, only to find out that the online system was accepting unsuitable referrals to contract which had been terminated several months before.
NHS Choose and book where uninterested and unhelpful when I tried to report this
But all now seems to be resolved
We were finally referred to Mr Shepherd and the paediatric surgery team at Nottingham Children’s Hospital.
I cannot fault the care we received from this point on. Everyone from the PA and waiting list Administrator (who helped ensure this was completed before the first day of High School), through to the consultant and everyone who got us through the surgery. I have remembered a few first names but I am reluctant to single out any one individual because everyone was so kind, caring, professional, knowledgeable and supportive. I know that for them it was just another day at work and the procedures may not have been the most challenging. For my son and I this was a much bigger deal - it was clear from their actions that every single member of the team never forgot this, not even for a second.
We are very grateful to you all for the many acts of kindness, throughout our stay. Thank you
