"System has changed in the 11 months since assessment"

About: Children & younger people's services / Early Intervention Speech and Language Therapy (Home talk)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter has severe  speech difficulties . We were happy for a quick appointment , within a couple of weeks of being referred . We could choose where we were seen, which we arranged by ringing a number ( which took several attempts as no one answers and we couldn’t leave a message) but what you think is the start of treatment is just the start of another huge  wait.

The therapist, although professional,  was quite off hand  at times when we were asking questions and asking for activities to do at home. The assessment was very short,  one book was used  and we weren’t able to ask many questions. We were given some  general ideas which were  helpful  but nothing that was particular to our daughter  and nothing that we could sit down and do even though was asked for ideas of how to help at home and what school could do.  We were told that it would take 6-12 months  for someone from a different team to see her in school. This is far too  long!

The therapist explained it was due to funding cuts and lack of staff , which we understand  , but  12 months to wait for your child to be seen when no one can understand them feels too long . It feels like the assessment was pointless .. as she will need another assessment as she’s waited so long.  We  have recently  been told that our daughter won’t be seen In school but we have to go to clinic and won’t be seen by a specialist after all as they have changed how they work in the 11 months since we were assessed . All in all a very disappointing and frustrating experience , just wish we had the money to get private therapy!

Thank you for taking the time to post on care opinion.

I apologise for the frustration and disappointment you have felt with the Speech and Language Therapy service.

Since you first contacted our appointment line, we have made several changes to the system. There are specific callers for specific services which has helped reduce the number of calls that are not answered.

I apologise for the behaviour of the therapist and am happy to discuss this with you further so I can speak to the individual personally as this is not acceptable. If you contact the trust patient experience team they will be able to pass on your details to myself so I can investigate.

I am also disappointed that you were informed that the delay was due to staff cuts and funding issues. There has been no reduction in the number of staff employed within the service. The waiting lists have increased due to the increasing demand on our service and this is something we are working hard to address this. The service is looking at different ways of working and this does include seeing children in clinic. This reduces travel time and therefore enables us to see more children in a timely manner. The service and trust takes this matter seriously hence the work going on and we have successfully reduced our waiting times between assessment and treatment b 5 months in the past year.

Please do however contact me via patient experience if you wish to discuss further

Sophy
