What I liked
The A & E staff were very helpful and responsive, in particular the male Nurse who really helped in gaining control of the extreme pain I was in.
What could be improved
On the ward all the patients are treated as objects to be taken through a routine of getting washed, dressed, meds and breakfast regardless of their condition, needs or wants. Nursing staff bounded in at 8.00 shouting 'Morning Ladies' and putting and the lights on and there was no choice you had to get up. This included the lady in the next bed who was dying from stomach cancer and wanted to sleep, she had to get up and sit by the side of her bed despite begging staff to let her sleep. At 11.00pm one night I asked for the large lights to be turned off as had not slept in three days due to pain and was told no because a lady needed her dressing checked which she actually no longer had. Came home in pain without pain medication because the pharmacy closes at 4.30 so if the doctor says you can go home after that time you either go home without or stay until the next day which I really couldn't face. I was just having tablets given and felt i could do that myself and get rest with the support of my family and GP. Received take home medications the next day at 1pm (which my husband collected), dispite being told they would be ready first thing. Horrendous, very vulnerable condition being in hospital made worse by outdated nursing practices and consultants who are still above reading patient notes. Not patient focused.
"Oudated and archaic nusring practices. not patient..."
