"Mothers care at fvrh"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Diabetes Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Elderly medicine

(as a relative),

My mother is in her eighties and has not been in hospital for over 30 years. She took ill and was 1st put in a&e. After her being assesed they were going to send her home but my stepdad insisted she was ill and not ready to go home as her blood sugar kept dropping or rising more than it should and she had a few hypos.

She was taken to acute assesment unit where they looked into her medication and found she did not need to take a few of them. The staff were very informative and 1 of them was a diabetic nurse who explained to her and my stepdad what they needed to know. Her care in this unit was excellent thank you all. She was then moved into ward 32a where she spent about a week. The staff in there were very patient and made sure my mum and stepdad got all the information they needed, they were absolutely without a doubt brilliant so thank you to the nurses and doctors in 32a.

Mum is now home and feeling much better.Mum has been diabetic for many years and things change over the years like weight loss, no one ever told her that she did not need as much insulin  or in her case no more injections or that if her count was 5 or under to get more carbs before she injected her insulin, so pls if you have this condition or your elders check with the doctors. A huge thank you to all staff in ward 32a FVRH for looking after my mum and for the care she recieved.

Hi,

Thanks for sharing this, it's so nice to hear that your Mum is feeling better. I've also passed on your post to my colleagues in A32 and AAU.

It must've been a really stressful time for you all, especially if your Mum hasn't been in hospital for such a long time.

You've raised a really important issue about blood sugar control in older people. What you might be interested to know is that as part of our Ageing and Health teaching program for our junior doctors we have a session on managing diabetes as it's something we feel is really important. If it's ok with you could I share this post the next time we have that session?

Thanks again for taking the time to post this. It's really appreciated.

Best wishes

Claire

Hi wee me

Thanks for taking the time to share your mum and stepdad's experience of some of our services here at Forth Valley Royal Hospital.

I was pleased to learn that the Emergency Department staff listened to your stepdad's concerns about your mum's diabetes and arranged for her to be admitted for further assessment.

I hope your mum is on the mend.

Kind Regards

Jude

Hello wee me,

Thank you for taking the time to post such a lovely message onto Care Opinion - this is very much appreciated. I am really pleased to hear that the care within the Acute Assessment Unit was excellent and I am sure the staff there will be delighted to know they got it right for your mother during her time with us. I will be certain to share this with my teams in AAU / CAU. Please pass on my regards to your mother and I wish her a speedy recovery.

Best wishes,

Gavin

Hello

Thank you so much for your lovely message on Care Opinion. When I shared it with our team, they appreciated the feedback about the care they gave to your mother. Our nurses work hard to centre the care they give around each patient, and that includes caring for their family and working towards discharging them home safely.

Your warm thank you did much to uplift their spirits and reinforce their good practice.

Kind regards

Tracey and A32 team
