"Very Very Bad"

About: Royal Hampshire County Hospital

What I liked

I arrived with a letter from my doctor after a day’s work in the RHC Winchester Casualty Dept, who I cannot fault for service and expediency. i was diagnosed with Pancreatitis with suspected gallstones and was then taken for overnight observation into Kemp Welsh ward where the staff were told to monitor me closely. My Catheter started leaking in my hospital bed and I paged for assistance to be told that they would need to find someone else to deal with this. I was kept waiting and eventually a nurse came and saw the problem and resolved it leaving me lying in my bed soaking in my urine. During the course of the night the catheter leaked more so that I awoke saturated in my own urine. The sister on morning duty who appeared opened the windows on the ward which froze everyone (particularly the elderly who complained to no avail. She then gave me the equivalent of wet wipes to try to clean myself. When one of the elderly gentlemen stated that he was struggling to eat his breakfast role, the sister was both belligerent in her response and quite rude. I asked a nurse to tell my consultant that I was insisting to be moved to Sarum Road private hospital and take advantage of my private healthcare plan to get away from the disgraceful performance where dignity, caring, and medical professionalism was totally lacking. Later the nurse came back to say the consultant had said that if I wanted to go to Sarum Road I could. Taking this as the first positive and caring action so far, I started to make arrangements with the healthcare organisation and Sarum Road who agreed to send an ambulance to collect me. later a nurse told me Sarum Road had been in touch and could not accept my transfer because the consultant refused to recommend me to them.

What could be improved

With little choice, I discharge myself, and the sister asked if I had made up my mind what I was doing. When I explained I was discharging myself, her profession response was "its your decision". Basingstoke is now treating me.

Basingstoke North Hants Hospital is exactly about what and how hospitals should treat their patients and what hospitals should be like.

I will never go back to RHC Winchester, and I would thoroughly recommend anyone to go to Basingstoke for goof professional health care, where your dignity is respected and caring is a priority.

I felt sorry for the older patients I left behind.
