"Fab treatment from nurses and junior doctors -..."

About: Dewsbury & District Hospital

What I liked

Nursing staff were lovely. They treated me with respect and maintained my diginity at all times. They were responsive to my needs and made a horrible time seem an awful lot better! I really appreciated that they didn't make me feel rushed and took time to explain things.

What could be improved

The medical staff repeated investigations for what I felt was a unnecessary number of occasions. This was both distressing and painful on my part and also made me feel that they were not even attempting to maintain my dignity. Their explanations, especially from senior medical staff, were (on the whole) lacking and communication skills were terrible. I felt like I was in the way and didn't feel I was treated as a human being or with respect - absolutely no compassion what-so-ever. The junior doctors thankfully had much better communication skills than their senior colleagues and I did receive some explanations. Overall, the senior medical staff left me feeling quite distressed and traumatised. If it wasn't for the nurses being so lovely I think I'd have been in bit of a state!

Theatre staff were also fabulous!

Phlebotomist was great - found a vein first time (woo hoo!) though I would have liked to have known what the blood tests were for. A little communication from the doctors would have been appreciated.

Anything else?

Overall, more respect for patient's diginity and keeping them informed wouldn't go amiss. Senior doctors bedside manner was terrible but the junior doctors were fab! Nurses were also fab and couldn't be faulted.
