"Excellent treatment from start to finish of..."

About: Broomfield Hospital / Accident and emergency

Following a call to NHS111 regarding symptoms which I feared might relate to a mild stroke, I was advised to attend Brookfield A&E, and an ambulance would be sent to collect me. I explained that I could be taken to the hospital within the hour and declined the offer.

I arrived at the hospital A&E at about 19.00hrs and was triaged in 30 minutes. Some half an hour later I was interviewed by another member of medical staff requiring fine details of events prior to my symptoms being a cause for concern, and shortly after a doctor examined me. The doctor said that a brain scan would be necessary as well as a blood test and an ECG test. All three events took place extremely quickly and efficiently. A Stroke nurse then carried out further tests, and confirmed that a stroke was probably unlikely. A bed was provided in the observation ward and a nurse provided sanwhiches and a drink for both me and my wife. My wife left at about 23.00hrs and I waited in bed for any further tests. A doctor came to see me at about 2.30hrs and confirmed that the scans were negative and I was believed to be suffering from Bells Palsy. This would be treated with high doses of steroids for an initial 6 day period diminishing day by day to a maintenance level where my GP would provide any necessary further treatment. I was later transferred to the discharge lounge where breakfast was provided at about 7.00hrs, and I was informed that I could leave once my transport had arrived. I confirmed that I would collect my tablets before departing. The nurse in charge informed pharmacy and was available shortly after 10.00hrs.

In summary, from entering A&E to being able to depart with problem identified and treatment advised with courteous and efficient treatment throughout, within twelve hours, was nothing short of brilliant. I doubt the private sector could equal that performance let alone exceed it!

I am most grateful
