My husband was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit recently at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy with legionnaires diseases where he was intubated and put on a ventilator.
He remained on the ventilator until he was taken off it after 5 days. He was then supported by oxygen and antibiotics. From there, with the expert care he received, he progressed so well, he was transferred direct to ward 43.This traumatic experience was alleviated by the staff's kindness, support and above all professionalism. It was made clear I had access to my husband's bedside day or night and I was kept informed of each stage of treatment by being privy to their decision-making. Questions were. encouraged and explanations given. As well as giving my husband expert care, they looked after me as well, giving me advice, practical support and information. When my husband was taken off the ventilator, the staff went above and beyond the call of duty by doing extra things for his care and comfort. I knew all the nurses and doctors by their first names and it was like being part of an extended family. This was the NHS at its best and the experience will remain with me for the rest of my life. I salute them all.
