My mum had suffered a mental breakdown and although she was a lot better than she was she still had the incontinent issue. She went to day care centre twice a week. She was assessed by a health worker and given 3 pads a day by NHS. (the ration I think) These were clearly not enough for day and night. If we rationally look at this, she needed 1 when getting up, 1 mid morning, 1 lunch time, 1 mid pm, 1 tea time, 1 mid evening, 1 for going to bed. So 7 in all at least and more if needed.
When someone is suffering from mental problems, my mum's main one was severe anxiety, she was always worried that she may smell or be wet on a chair when she was at the care home. Regardless of this there is the hygiene and personal care of skin etc If a baby was only changed 3 times a day then I am sure that social services would have something to say. So my Dad bought extra padas himself, these were not easy to get hold of, as they were special ones.
I have been told that in some care homes the pads are limited and the staff are not allowed to use more than allowed.
It was one question I would have asked staff when we went to Taunton as I know the manager said they bought in more but my question to the staff would be " How many pads are you allowed to use each day with patients?" I know when my mum was in hopital they were going to fit a catheter and when I enquired why, it was because one nurse said that she couldn't be bothered to take her to the toilet.
When my mum died they still delivered her pads so I gave them to the care home and marked the box in large letters. USE AS MANY AS YOU LIKE AS THEY ARE A GIFT.
