"My experience of great care whilst very ill with depression"

About: Eastbourne District General Hospital / Accident and emergency South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust / Working age mental health care (inpatient)

(as a service user),

I became unwell with depression when my personal circumstances changed dramatically. I had a tendency to experience bouts of depression throughout my life but had never been so unwell in the past. I did not realise how unwell I had become. My GP was very helpful and I was referred for CBT which had helped in the past. However I still kept on sinking lower, I started medication which didn't seem to help.

I experienced suicidal thoughts and I was referred to the Crisis team who were very supportive and extremely wonderful each time I saw them, but still I kept on sinking lower despite all my efforts to get well. I sunk so low that I tried to take my own life with an overdose. This attempt luckily failed.

I had also been seen by the laision team who helped me with phone calls and support and listening to me.  When I woke up I was due to see them so I attended my appointment. They were brilliant and called an ambulance.

The ambulance team were so lovely and kind.   A& E were very lovely to me too. I was admitted to Amberley ward and they all were so kind, caring, professional and helpful. Everyone was so good to me.

I feel blessed that there is such a wonderful service at such a terrible time in my life. I do owe them my life and can't speak highly enough of them.  So many people complain about the health service but I have only ever experienced high levels of care and professionalism, despite the difficult circumstances in which everyone works.

I want to put on record that the teams who have supported me have all be wonderful and I am very well now and very grateful to each one of them, including all the support teams in catering, . cleaning, office etc.   We are so blessed in this country to have such caring people working under such difficult times.

Thank you for your kind words regarding our ambulance crew, I would be happy to pass your comments on to them personally as it is always nice for our crews to receive positive feedback. I wonder if you would be happy to email to pet@secamb.nhs.uk details of the address our crew attended and the date and time in order that I can do this.

Thank you again for taking the time to write in with your lovely comments, I wish you well for the future.

Kind regards

Thank you for leering us know about the part we played in your support - I'm really pleased that you got good care from every part of the NHS you came into contact with - so much of our work is done in partnership with other NHS organisations and its not just about the frontline staff as you rightly point out - the caterers, cleaners, office people all have a part to play. Good luck for your continuing recovery

kind regards
