About: Strathcarron Hospice / In-Patient Unit

(as a relative),

Mum had spent two weeks in Forth Valley Hospital in Larbert recovering from explorative surgery and it was discovered that she had inoperable stomach cancer. She then spent three weeks at Strathcarron. The ethos at Strathcarron is wonderful and it seems that everyone is signed up to that positive ethos, including the cleaners and cooks. Not just the medical professionals. The nursing staff were so attentive and ensured that mum was turned regularly and made as comfortable as possible. They built relationships with mum, knowing that they would lose her. That takes a special kind of person, yet all of the nurses knew mum well. When mum died, the staff immediately turned their attention to supporting our family. Mum was given the gift of a dignified death and we will be forever grateful to the staff of Strathcarron Hospice.

Hello

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion. I am sorry that there had been such a short time between your mum being diagnosed with cancer and her death. Such a short time frame leaves very little time for patients and families to come to terms with how serious the situation is and how quickly their/your lives are going to change.

We are very reassured to read that you and your family felt included in the care being given to your mum and that within a short period of time, you quickly felt the support of that ethos around you all. It is important to us all as a Team…and as you have said - that is all staff who work in the Hospice - that everyone feels they are being looked after when we are giving our day to day care

It sounds like feeling the ‘embrace’ of this support was in itself an important relationship to have developed with the Hospice and that it helped you as you prepared for the loss of your mum.
