"The good and bad of my hospital stay"

About: Northern General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Whilst things happened its infuriating some of the small things failed.

1) a&e dr and colleague could have given a clear understanding of how to deal with my infection, if its not receding in 24 hours come back, etc. My gp who then assessed on thursday was should then recommended leaving it even 24 hours.

2) surgical assessment centre northern general sheffield.  Day staff where brilliant, great patient involvement, explained issue well and sped to restore faith in my treatments, leading to an overnight stay, was unusual being moved at 3am from one ward to a other, should that have been better though though or planned?

3) ward huntsman 7 thursday frisay and saturday.

good: when nurses were there, really good friendly helping and amazing team.

Bad:

A) not enough nurses , you could find them in other bays, but they were always busy reading with patients.

B) handovers were ineffective, leading to missed doses of my meds, which when chased took 2 more hours for it to happen(a total of 3 hours overdue), all the time, the computer system had recorded correctly that the doses had not been given.

C) at least one occasion physio placed a fellow patient in a rehabilitation tool(leg stirrup) they then left for multiple hours and did not leave clear instructions to suppors staff, when the patient had issues where their leg had become unseated in the foot stirrup and had become, very uncomfortable it took some time for supports staff to assist as they could not reach physio. Finally support staff assisted in removing the device (causing great pain) and just as finished the physio come in, said "excellent you removed it" and then promptly left, not checking with the patient regarding the pain,or offered even the most basic of reassurance.

D) doctors, showed little leadership,  most I saw would ignore patients whilst they were sat on the computer, fly though the ward at speed too busy to deal with issues, ignore cries from at least one elderley patient, the ward phone, and the infuser alarms which were constantly sounding.

Only one of them took time to do the following.

1) muted an infuser alarm which was annoying patients.

2) said hello to an elderley patient, offered and found a few nurses to help in getting him out of bed

3) make sure multiple patients know what was likely to happen next.

On a special note, the student nurses were exceptional and should be very proud, they offered humour and tried really hard to make patients feel at rest.

Trolley cart from newsagent didnt appear once whilst i was there, this left a number of people unable to keep enterntained, why can a few books, or NHS news or even a few magazines not be kept around for the few poor people who couldnt move off ward(i was on the orthopedics ward, so as i was able to moved ended up being the ward gofor as nurses and supports staff were stretched thin.)  patients helping patients is good, but did lead me to not focus on my own wellbeing or rehabilitation.

Most of the patients had been there for multiple weeks, could these long term patients be given access to the free tv channels? Not one patient i saw use the tv system, possibly due to the extortionate cost.
