"They did not even check my baby's temperature"

About: Church Walk Surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my not quite 3 week old baby to see a gp after he had taken I'll over night, high temp, off his feeds and crying when held. I was seen by a gp that I will not name, and was seen for no more than 3 minutes maximum. I explained to the Dr how my baby had been and that my other two children had recently had chicken pox and temperatures and the doctor proceeded to feel his tummy.

The doctor told me he had trapped wind, I mentioned the high temperature he was running and the dr said, and'if you have temperatures in your house he will have one. At no point was my baby's temperature checked , his heart rate nothing.

I called later in the day as I still wasn't happy and wanted a second opinion. I was told by the receptionist that she would have to speak to the Dr to see if it was urgent enough. At this point I want to stress again that my baby wasn't quite 3 weeks old.

I spoke to my community midwife who advised me to get a second opinion in a& e and so I did. That night my baby was admitted with sepsis, brought on by viral meningitis. My baby was seriously ill at this point as the infection had really taken hold over the course of the day. I am absolutely appalled that a 3 week old baby who was running a temp never even had his temperature checked. It is outrageous and I will be taking my complaint further.

I was really dismayed to read your comments and sincerely sorry to hear of your negative experience at Church Walk Surgery.

It is always our intention to look after our patients and provide an excellent level of care.

I take all complaints very seriously and as I said in my initial letter to you, I would look into your complaint fully.

Unfortunately, due to a GP recruitment crisis in Lincolnshire, we rely very heavily on Locum GPs to ensure we have sufficient capacity to see our patients.

I have had to wait for this particular locum GP to return from holiday before I could fully investigate your concerns.

I will shortly be sending you a response but cannot comment on a public website as I am sure you can appreciate how unprofessional this would be and may breach patient confidentiality.

Kind regards

Mrs. Kari Buffey

I posted this around the same time I sent you my original complaint. There must have been a delay in it being posted. I was happy to receive your response and hear you were investigating. I look forward to hearing what you found from your investigation.

Thank you J
