I recently went to A&E with my not quite 3 week old baby who was running a high temperature, was off his food and was crying when held. I went for a second opinion as advised by my community midwife. We arrived just before 5pm and booked in. At 5.30pm we were seen by the nurses who did initial observations and informed me we would be seeing a Dr as my baby was running a high temp and a fast heart rate.
Nearly 2 hours later at 7. 15pm we were seen by a registrar who checked my baby again this time physical appearance etc and informed me we would have to see a paediatrician as was protocol with a baby under 2 months old.
At 9pm I asked at the reception desk how much longer we would be waiting as we were still to be seen. At 10pm I was called into a nurses room again for observations before being taken to the children's ward. Upon arrival at the children's ward his observations were taken again and at this point he was admitted with a temperature of 39. 9 degrees and a heart rate of over 200.
Myself and my baby were kept in hospital for him to be treated. He was suffering from sepsis that had progressed from viral meningitis that had been completely over looked by the A&E team and we were left waiting for 5 hours by which point he was seriously ill. This is absolutely disgusting practice for a 3 week old baby. 3 weeks old and I almost lost him because of failings not only from his GP but also because of the failings of Lincoln county hospitals A&E staff.
