"Very poor care"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / General surgery

My son has been unwell for two years with reflux and associated issues. He has had numerous tests over the past 18 months that have confirmed the severity of his illness. He has waited since February to see a surgeon who today totally dismissed his ill health and told him that he would not consider operating or offer any help.

Unfortunately one particular doctor you have left a teenager utterly devastated, his ill health has a terrible impact on his quality of life and your dismissive attitude is appalling. He asked if I was allowed to join him in the consulting room to be told time had "run out". Such poor care of a young person.

Our family have lost all faith in the RBH, we have had a unwell teenager for over two years that can not see any point in the future when he will feel well again. We expect far better and your treatment of our child falls way short.

We are very sorry to hear about the negative experience you and your son have had and the way it has left your son feeling, not to mention the impact of your whole family losing faith in the NHS.

This is not the standard of care that we expect to deliver to our patients and we apologise for the distress this has caused.

We are very keen to try and resolve this and provide the care that your son requires and would very much like to work with you to provide the care you and your family expect and we aspire to deliver.

Your comments have been shared with the Surgical directorate who understand how distressed your family is and want to help but will need to review the patient records in order to find a way forward with any treatment of your sons condition.

Please could I encourage you to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01202 704886 or pals@rbch.nhs.uk to help arrange a mutually convenient time to talk to the relevant surgical team to find the best way help your son with his condition and improve his quality of life.

Regards

Patient Engagement Team
