What I liked

I had metastatic brain tumour surgery on Friday evening, and was discharged on Sunday afternoon from the Wessex Neurological Centre. Everyone in presurgery assessment (on Thursday morning), day of surgery, the RTU (where I was taken after surgery) and D level Neuro ward was very caring and attentive, and all staff from highest to lowest looked after me very well. Catering was surprisingly good for patients, although I missed an evening hot drink.

What could be improved

Presurgery was very prompt on Thursday, but on the Friday I was moved to third on the list so waited from 07:10 to 16:00 without food! Visitor facilities suffered with the reflooring of the restaurant, and the coffee shop closed very early on Friday. Parking is easy but expensive.

Anything else?

Medical staff seem to spend too much time arranging logistics and other managerial tasks.

We are sorry that your surgery slot was changed on the day. Unfortunately sometimes changes are unavoidable when we are dealing with complex cases but we hope you were kept informed.

The new restaurant has now opened fully but we are sorry you were inconvenienced during your stay.

Although it seems a long time to be without food we are sure you appreciate it is essential to be nil by mouth for the operation to reduce the risks associated with having a general anaesthetic.

Revenue generated through car parks is used for the upkeep and security of the car parks, and the remainder is ploughed directly and immediately back into frontline patient services.
