I had two assessment appointments (the first with a registrar and the second with a dietician) in June and July 2016. I was on the waiting list (with deteriorating health) until the end of January 2018, when I finally had my gastric bypass surgery. The whole process was very stressful - I didn't know, even on the day of my surgery, if it would actually go ahead, as staff kept telling me conflicting information. I had a very bad reaction to the anaesthetic (lost movement and all feeling in my arms and hands for 10 days) and was re-admitted to hospital with lots of pain, when I'd originally been discharged too early. There was basically no informative follow up post-op. I've relied on my own will-power and the internet for guidance. On the bright side, I've lost nearly 6 stones in 5 months with minimal exercise. Overall, I feel 95% of my success is down to me. However, despite it all, I'd absolutely recommend anyone who is suffering due to excess weight to seek out a referral for bariatric surgery - it's changed my life. But you'll need to be strong, be patient, inform yourself, and have low expectations of the hospital.
