"Investigation of breast lump"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / Breast surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was referred by GP and appointment sent / phoned within a few days.

She had an ultrasound and was then told the were unable to proceed with biopsy as the appointments had been doubled booked and she would have to come back , they would send another appointment. Aside from her taking time off work she now has to wait and worry as to when she would be able to have the rest of the investigations. Whilst I understand these things happen It would of been more helpful if the appointment could of been made there and then to mitigate something that was not her fault.

Dear Fixer

Thank you for taking the time to let us know your concerns on the Care Opinion website. We need to know about the experiences our patients and their families have, and we appreciate the time you have given to raising these.

We are sorry your daughter did not have a rapid one-stop service with us for her appointment. In order to provide a one-stop service for our patients, we need a variety of staff from different services (e.g. ultrasound, radiology, clinicians) to deliver the various investigations that the patient may need. It may be that, on the day your daughter attended RBCH, we were experiencing difficulties providing enough specialist staffing to enable biopsies to be carried out. As a result we may have had more patients booked in (I.e. double-booked) than we were able to treat. Although we are working hard to provide consistent reliable staffing for our one-stop services, we may, on occasions, need to ask patients to come back on a different day. We appreciate that this is not ideal and we would hope to minimise the anxiety that patients are experiencing. May I suggest that your daughter contacts the breast department on 01202 704524 if she would like further information regarding her biopsy? We appreciate the additional worry due to the delay that this causes and we apologise for this.

If your daughter would like to discuss her experience in more detail our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) would be happy to meet with her.

They can be contacted on 01202 704886 or pals@rbch.nhs.uk

Regards

Patient Engagement Team

Update posted by Fixer (a parent/guardian)

I have a comprehensive understanding of the difficulty in treating all patients when increase demand for services. However the staff Atitude could of been more empathetic as she felt it dismissive which made her feel anxious at having to visit again . We are hoping her outcome is positive as the week delay in getting definitive diagnosis and that no further treatment necessary.

Thank you for your timely response
