"Silent sinus syndrome nothing been done"

About: General Practices in Grampian

(as the patient),

Carden Medical Practice

I was diagnosed last year to have silent sinus syndrome. It was unexpected on a MRI that was for another health issue. I attended an appointment when I received the diagnosis and was offered to see a rheumatologist but declined till the news sunk in. I decided recently I wanted to change my mind and do something about this. Only to be told to see a specialist nurse to check my sinuses, I was baffled as to why I had to have them checked research I have done has stated surgery is my only option.

I personally think it is outrageous to change support there for even more visits when all I needed was a referral put through.

Dear opinionabdn89,

Thanks for sharing your story with us.

Sometimes the route that patients travel, often called the pathway – from contact with their GP to referral - can change. This can be for all sorts of reasons but often to help ease waiting times or when there is a shortage of staff. Specialist nurses have high level expertise of the patient group for which they care, and liaise closely with the consultants in the same speciality. It might be (although I’m not sure) that the specialist nurse will assess you for any change in your condition before you are seen by the consultant (this might be something that would have been done at your first consultant appointment previously). However, I can understand it must be frustrating - especially if the reason for the change wasn’t communicated with you.

I’m going to try to get hold of someone in the service to see if they can shed a bit more light. Once I’ve done so I’ll get back to you here.

Take care,

Kirsten
