"Cardiology 24 hour tape"

About: New Stobhill Hospital / Cardiology

(as a relative),

I took my mother who is in her nineties for a 24 hour heart monitor tape at the Kerry Jane Hogg Unit Stobhill. The appointment was at 10:30 am the monitor was fitted at 10:45 am, we were told to bring the tape back at 8.30 am which would mean the tape would have to be taken off at the latest at 7:45am the following morning. This would mean it would be on for 21 hours which is three hours short of the requested time. When we were given the impression by medical staff who requested the tape and by the hospital correspondence it would be 24 hours. A  pink slip was included with the appointment letters which stated "......return your monitor to the Department  the following day at 8:45am/12:45pm " which I think if you have a half ten appointment it would be reasonable to take it that it should be returned by 12:45pm. When I asked why it was to be returned so early in the morning the nurse replied that lot of people don't bring them back, this response did not really help. I explained I couldn't bring it in at that time as I had arranged to return it after 24  hours were up and not to fit it if that was the case. However the nurse fitted it and on returning my mother home we realised they had put on the slip the monitor was to be returned between 8:30 am and 9:30 am . We feel the nurse totally disregarded what the patient and her carer said.

In summary my mothers health care is been put at risk by shortening of a diagnostic investigation. The correspondence was misleading and I wonder if it should be revised as it appears to be out of date, the information letter was created 31/07/09 at no time does it say it has to be on less than 24 hours .

I am sorry that both you and your Mother felt that the nurse disregarded what you both said.

I have shared your post with the General Manager for Cardiology and have asked that they look into this, and to confirm how long your Mother should have worn the monitor.

I am sorry that your experience when attending Stobhill’s Kerry Jane Hogg Cardiology unit was not a satisfactory one. From your description, it would seem that staff could have been more attentive to the concerns you voiced at the time regarding the monitoring duration and, had clearer information been given, we may have allayed your understandable concern about the duration of your mother’s cardiac monitor.

The Head of the Cardiac Department has been made aware of your experience and joins me in conveying our apology and thanking you for the opportunity to raise staff awareness regarding your experience and afford us an opportunity for service improvement.

With regard to addressing your concerns about the duration of the monitoring period, I can advise that it is not always necessary or practical for our patients to sustain the exact monitoring period (this is usually 24 or 72 hours).

Your mother will have been monitored for a substantial period and even constant monitoring within a 20 hour duration period of time is sufficient time to provide the clinicians with an idea about the function of a patient’s cardiac rhythm. If there was any doubt about the duration required to pick up cardiac arrhythmias or anomalies then a 72 hours monitor would have been arranged. I hope you will be assured that your mother’s health will not have been put at risk.
