"The majority of the nursing staff on the various..."

About: Cumberland Infirmary

What I liked

The majority of the nursing staff on the various wards I was on were lovely, a few of them do seem to need a refresher on bed side manor though. It was good to be able to have my own room on request as I don't do very well on wards full of other patients.

What could be improved

I was told on numerous occasions that a Consultant would be coming to see me, in the end it took 4 days for a relevent Consultant to get to me, and it still wasn't the one it was supposed to be. There seemed to be constant confusion over my meds, the drip I had kept stopping as it was in the vain at my elbow & every time I moved my arm it blocked the flow, I was actually chastised by the consultant when I said I was dehydrated (due to violent sickness and being on nill by mouth) as he said I should have kept my arm straight, very difficult when in pain and sleeping. Nobody could decide if I was allowed to eat at all as the status on my name board kept changing from NBM, Free Fluids, Fluid Balance etc. I was told on my first day that I would get a visit from the Pain Clinic, I'm still waiting.

Anything else?

I have had surgery twice, and given birth twice in this Hospital, and I cannot fault the Midwifes or the Nurses on Gynae who looked after me following my hysterectomy last year. I have also had several admissions onto Beech, and even though most of the nurses are great, I've always come away with no answers, lost dignity, anger at arrogant Consultants & a feeling of being thought of as a hysterical woman, & I am certainly not that.

One of the things that upset me the most was a surgeon telling me that my previous surgeries were in his opinion "unnessessary" how dare he second guess the surgeon that did both of those surgeries which have by the way, given me my quality of life back, obviously that means absolutely nothing to him at all. I can't imagine any 30 year old woman having a total hysterectomy "unnessessarily". Cold, Unfeeling, arrogant & very un-helpfull.
