"Pre-operation questionnaire"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital (Paisley)

(as a service user),

I recently had an endoscopy and on the pre-op questionnaire there was a question "do you have epilepsy or glaucoma" I asked a nurse why this was asked and I was advised it was because some of the medication can interact with other drugs etc. used during the proceedure.

I have a condition called Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension and the most commonly prescribed treatment drug is acetazolamide (originally only used for epilepsy or glaucoma) it is usually prescribed for IIH in larger doses than for the other conditions and if it could cause issues I beleive IIH should also be asked to avoid confusion.

Although it is officially 1 in every 100,000 that have IIH, recent studies suggest it is rising and could be as many as 24 in 100,000 so the likelyhood of someone with IIH having a medical proceedure is greater.

I did have acetazolamide on my list of medications but no-one picked it up as being a possibly problematic drug as I answered no to all the above questions. Once I mentioned it they discussed and looked in to it and I am unsure if any changes had to be made but I imagine it is useful to know should any problems occur during the proceedure.

Just to make clear this is in no way a complaint, it is just something I thought should be brought to attention as it could put someone in danger in the future.
