I went to my routine midwife appointment at the GPs recently in the morning and the midwife noticed my blood pressure was quite high and was concerned. She rang through to Wigan Royal Albert Edward Infirmary maternity ward and told me to go straight to the triage ward to be assessed to monitor my blood pressure.
As I arrived I got seen to straight away by a lovely sister and an auxiliary who started to do my blood pressure and monitor babies heart rate. After an hour of being monitored the nurses were concerned that my blood pressure wasn’t coming down so got a doctor to come and see me and assess me and they decided that the best course of action was to admit me over night to give me some medication to try and reduce my blood pressure.
Even though I work in the hospital myself as an auxiliary, I have never been admitted before and this actually scared me. Knowing how busy the hospital was and there had been a bed crisis I was hoping I wasn’t going to be admitted and take up a bed when it may have been needed by someone more urgent. But all the nurses were absolutely lovely and made me feel at ease. I got put in a side room which I was not expecting so it made me more relaxed.
The ward was very busy but I was continually monitored throughout the night and morning and every member of staff I came across from the sisters, staff nurses, auxiliaries and domestics were so helpful and caring. The day after I had a doctor come and review me again and because my blood pressure had come down I was allowed to be discharged home with some medication.
I would like to say thank you to all the staff on the Maternity Ward who looked after me and now I am less stressed about coming into hospital to have my baby in May due to having such a good experience.
Thank you.
