"Extremely Traumatic and the worst..."

About: The Great Western Hospital

What I liked

I was induced with my daughter almost 2 weeks overdue, during this period in i was contracting for 11 hrs it got to the point where they were everyminute and often overlapping but had no dilation and in extreme pain ( this i learn was actually symptoms of a placenta abruption) this however was the least of my worry's as my daughters heart rate kept dropping very very low this was left for over 3-4 hrs like this ( i still feel this should have been taken serious alot sooner to avoid the outcome which happened), i was eventually rushed to delivery where there was more monitoring and my waters were broken but still had problems with her heart... I am now rushed into theatre where they discover my placenta has come away and my me and my daughter are loosing blood, she lost almost a litre, she was dying, when she was delivered she was not breathing me and my partner had to watch as they massaged her little chest to help her heart and a mask to start her breathing again at this time they would not say if she would live... she spent time in intensive and special care Thank god she is a healthy 10 week old now, i can't praise the surgeons enough for acting so quickly (unlike on the maternity unit before hand) when they found the bleed a few more minutes and i wouldn't have my beautiful girl here.... ( i was told more by my partner and mother than by staff as to what had gone on, i learnt most of the details from my notes myself) i can't explain how cross i am that no one contacted us to see how were dealing with things or to get a chance to question certain details what makes our experience any less important, traumatic or difficult?

What could be improved

How quickly they react to certain situations, not to always wait till the last minute before treating things as an emergency....

Thank your for sharing you feedback. I'm sorry you are unhappy with your experience and do not feel that you have had the opportunity to reflect on your delivery by talking with one of the Midwifery team. Our Head of Midwifery is keen to talk with you about your experience so we can understand the issues and provide you with any advice or support you may need. Please email your contact details to us at: comms@gwh.nhs.uk and she will make contact with you to arrange a time to talk. Our staff work hard to deliver good care for patients and when patients do not feel they have recieved it we do our best to learn how we can do things differently in the future.

Kind regards

Kevin
