"Countless surgeries"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Outpatients

(as the patient),

Noticed a small lump, went to the doctors and was given antibiotics. These didn't work and within a week I had a fully formed bartholins abscess. I went to A& E at Glasgow royal, was assessed and sent home (I could not walk, sit, lie down, anything I was in agony). Once home I was using a cooling pad because I was in so much pain but this gave little relief. The pain became so bad that the next I was vomiting with the pain, I returned to A& E and they kept me in overnight. I couldn't keep painkillers down either. The next day I had surgery, the marsupialisation. As far as I was told it all went well. Until after it had healed I had a small hole left which I was told was for the gland to continue draining. This hole kept filling up with pus and would burst and fill up etc etc. I had countless swabs taken and they all came back that there was no infection. I dealt with this for months thinking I just had to put up with it. I also didn't have a follow up for months after my surgery. Anyway, I'm not sure how many times I had been back to the gynaecologist but eventually the doctor looked at it and couldn't see what the problem was! ! I was dealing with a lump the size of a pea/grape (it would expand) and fill with pus. I was made to feel like I was wasting their time. Eventually I was booked in for surgery to remove this lump. It turns out that after the surgery the doctor didn't even remove the bit I was having trouble with, it was a completely different area which was cut into! Again, months go by of me visiting the nurses and my local gp for follow ups because the surgeons couldn't see me for months after my surgery. Pus started leaking from my back passage. I got an appointment at the Royal again and my surgeon couldn't see there was anything wrong. Whenever I pushed on the lump pus would come out of my back passage. It was very unsettling and again I was made to feel like I was wasting time and my surgeon was ignoring me. I finally requested an MRI (astounds me my surgeon didn't recommend it) and they found that the cyst had backtracked into my back passage and a fistula had formed. Now, I had my first surgery at 21 years old. I missed my exams etc. It was bad. Then at the age of 22/23 I had to have a seton suture put in. This involves cutting my perineum from hole to hole. 23 years old. Not to mention this surgeon I had that was to perform the surgery. He got annoyed with me when I didn't understand the procedure. His diagrams were simple circle line drawings and his annoyance with me was clear. I felt incredibly uncomfortable with this surgeon.   It was only after talking to a nurse who went and did a lot of research that I finally understood a bit more about the procedure. This issue is still ongoing, I had the seton suture removed last year but my whole vagina is still a mess. I have major anxiety and depression which this situation has had a direct influence on. I felt that the surgeons couldn't be bothered with me, I was in and out very quickly, they were impatient when I asked questions, a few times after my countless surgeries they didn't even come by afterwards to check on me. I do want to say one great thing though, the nurses were exceptional in the care they provided me with, I was alone on my first surgery and the nurses at the Glasgow royal maternity unit looked after me as if I was their own daughter. If they hadn't been there helping me through I don't think I would have coped as well. And thank you to the nurses who were there with me when I came round from the anaesthesia, you were a real comfort to me.
