I went over on my ankle 5th Feb at home. Thought I'd pulled ligaments etc as very painful and swollen. I have ethers danios, (hyper mobility type) so not unusual to go over on my ankles and pain in my joints also normal. Went off on holiday 3days later and the swelling and bruising gradually reduced but thought I'd get my GP to check it out on my return. I was sent to K & C for X-ray where it showed I'd broken my fifth metatarsal. Told they now had a virtual fracture clinic and that my X-ray would be looked at by a consultant and I would be contacted the following morning. No phone call from William Harvey, rang their hotline number I'd been given and left a message on the answerphone. Hoping for a phone call Weds am but had to call the hotline again and left a message that if I didn't receive a call I would go ove to Ashford. This I did. Saw a nurse in Orthopaefics who gave me a boot, told me to rest, would try to get someone to call me and no I wouldn't be seeing a Dr that week (important as a carer for my Mum who I was going to stay with later that week)..Called into QE as I needed a crutch. Saw a member of staff in orphopaedics who took my X-ray to a consultant who said that I needed an elected specialist appointment as by now the break should have started to self heal but it hadn't. Evidently I would never have received a phone call from William Harvey as I wasnt on the virtual clinic list at all. The member of staff kindly did me a hand written note to give to my GP for a referral back to the hospital. GP on leave, so another GP did the referral later that week. I am now on a list, no idea of whom, via new appointments to see an orthopaedic specialist. I suffered this break 8.5 weeks ago and it would nice if I could feel some confidence in the way this system is meant to work. If only my real foot was as virtual as this process. NHS have an 18wk target presumably from the referral date, in my case adding another 7wks prior to that date.
"Pity my foot isn't virtual!"
