"Pain management wait"

About: Seacroft Hospital / Pain Management

(as a relative),

I cannot fault the care and kindness in pain management and this story is in no way a criticism of the Doctors and nurses treating me.

My partner was listed as an urgency for a trial of a spinal cord stimulator 6 months ago and has been told it will be at least another two months before the trial takes place and if that is successful a similar amount of time to wait for a permanent implant. This is a question for management really, "since when was it ok to leave a patient in utter agony and unable to care for himself without help for 8 months" ?We understand the pressures of the nhs and have been very patient. It breaks my heart to see what a shadow of his former self he has become. How does this wait time go along with the NHS constitution. I just despair for him, he has no life. I have spoken to the pain nurses who are lovely but are powerless to move things along

Dear Jenny,

Thank you for taking the time out to write to us and bring your concerns to our attention.

I am very sorry to hear about the delay in your partner's appointments and understand this must be a very distressing time for you both.

I would be happy to look into the matters you have raised, however, there is not enough information included in your post for me to investigate further. I would therefore ask that you contact our Trust’s Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS) if you feel you would like to discuss your concerns further.

This would allow us look into the matters you have raised and contact the relevant management to see why there is a delay. It would also allow us to see what lessons could be learnt from your experience.

Please call our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0113 2066261 or alternatively email patientexperience.leedsth@nhs.net, if you feel you would like to discuss your concerns further.

Thank you once again for taking the time to write to us.

With kind regards,

Rosie

Thanks for your reply, however I have spoken to PALS twice who referred me to the patient experience person who referred me to the pain nurses! I am so cross that he has to wait so long for a trial and I have been told that he will have to wait another 32 weeks if the trial is a success to have a permanent SCS implanted. If this is the timescale for urgent patients I dread to think what non urgent waits are.

My husband has been in pain for a very long time and has had to jump through lots of hoops to get this far. I am not attaching blame to staff at Seacroft who are great. Would like to know how management think this is acceptable and what can be done to help my husband and others waiting for such long periods.
