"Fantastic hospital. A good place to..."

About: Hammersmith Hospital

What I liked

I’ve experienced several facets of this hospital as an inpatient, outpatient and in the A&E room.

As an inpatient I was in the John Humphrey ward. Almost all of the staff (doctors, nurses, phlebotomists, porters etc) were incredible. The doctors were very detailed, professional and tried their best to help. I was surprised at how well they communicated with me about my condition and care. However, nurses varied between helpful and kind to indifferent and plain rude. But most treated patients with dignity. The rooms were very clean and reasonably comfortable. Food was edible at best but I suppose that’s expected.

As an outpatient my experience was varied. The waiting lists and times seemed very long and the appointments varied greatly in standard depending on the individual doctor. Rheumatology was a bit awful but Infectious Diseases and Gastroenterology were ok.

The A&E was clean and efficient. Luckily I wasn’t there at a peak time so the atmosphere was surprisingly relaxed. Doctors/ nurses excellent.

What could be improved

Waiting lists for outpatients is usually 2 months minimum. This is probably a feature of most NHS hospitals but it would be much appreciated if waiting times could somehow be shortened.

I personally found protected meal times were counterproductive. I wish it did not apply to relatives, as relatives can help you eat and bring food that’s more appealing. It’s also easier to eat when you have someone to chat with. These points are especially significant when your appetite and diet are severely limited due to pain and immobility.

Anything else?

Hospitals are never fun places to be in but Hammersmith Hospital is an exceptionally good one. Patients here are generally treated with dignity and genuine care. Best NHS care received to date.
