"A&E vs OOH"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Accident & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

I myself have presented my children with primary complaints at Out of Hours GP service in Glasgow (mainly easterhouse) and using the paediatric accident and emergency. It often astounds me just how busy Paeds a and e is and with what all appear to be primary care complaints.  I think I have perhaps realised why. As a member of the NHS myself I have a relatively basic but fair understanding of what a patient assessment should look like and when I compare this to what is, in general (not always), delivered @ ooh and Peads a and e, it is no wonder so many go to a and e with "minor illness". In my experience the assessment received in Paeds a and e is always as thorough and in depth as can be. This isn't always the case at ooh in my opinion. I have come to the conclusion that many parents take their kids to Paeds a and e not because they believe that that have a life threatening illness but because the assessment, treatment and explanations they receive there compared to ooh gives a level of reassurance that every parent craves when a child is unwell, no matter how trivial. So to stop long waits and in appropriate attendances in a and e perhaps our ooh GPs should take a leaf out of our Paeds accident and emergency doctors and nurses books.

Dear Assuredparent

Thank you for sharing your views on Care Opinion.

The Paediatric Emergency Department Team work tirelessly to ensure they provide safe, patient and family centred care to all patients and families who attend the Department. They will be delighted to hear your kind comments regarding previous attendances with your children. Our General Manager has shared your feedback with the team.

Please be assured that the Paediatricians regularly collaborate with GP colleagues to review the balance of care that is provided in the out of hour’s period across the Emergency Department and the GP Out of Hours centres.

Best wishes

Pam
