My dad was brought in by Ambulance in the middle of February just before midnight from Aviemore when he was unable to co-ordinate himself and was off his legs. Once taken to A&E he was transferred to Ward 6A.
I called Ward 6A where I was told my dad was being discharged despite already being told he was off his legs for an unknown reason which should have been investigated further? When the nurses came to assist him to stand he collapsed due to being unable to co-ordinate his right side which to me sounded like he had a stroke with myself working in the pre-hospital setting.
Once he had collapsed the nurses and doctors thought maybe it was not such a good idea to let him go despite him already raising concerns about his right side and co-ordination and this lead to a brain scan being done. Doctors advised that he had brain mets (spread from cancer elsewhere) and told him without the support of family being around him at all, which I think shows no care or thought from the Doctor delivering this information.
When I arrived he was transferred to Ward 7C where I was unable to speak to a Doctor and only a nurse was able to give brief information despite an almost failed discharge and the potential severity of what was going on.
During the time in Raigmore there was no soft food diet and he rarely got fluids and was getting treated for brain mets with a steroid.
My dad was kept in Raigmore until Friday where he was transferred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Once comfortable in the hospital he was taken for an MRI Scan on Monday evening where he was told he had actually had a stroke.
This has meant there was a potential near failed discharge of a stroke patient, no treatment given for the stroke within 6 hour window and this in turn will have potential issues for his recovery.
This is very disappointing treatment from Raigmore Hospital and how have no staff have been able to diagnose a stroke despite being a major push within the NHS on sepsis and stroke diagnosis?
