"Venous leg ulcers"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres University Hospital Wishaw / Dermatology

(as the patient),

In 1994 I severed my right achilles tendon playing football. Many of the blood vessels were damaged.   I retired from Police force that year after 29 years service.   I lived on a farm and raised beef cattle. One of my bulls caught my right leg with its hoof and it resulted in me having leg ulcers. I have attended many various leg ulcer clinics and Monklands Hospital Ulcer clinic (disbanded)   I have tried dozens of remedies including compression bandaging/stockings.   I also self-dressed my ulcers. In 2015 the main vein became lumpy, and I was referred for an operation at Hairmyres.

I was operated on  in Feb 2016  For the next year the ulcers would almost heal then break out again. I struck my leg against something, and I had to go back to Thistle practice Airdrie, to see the Doctor. I then began attending nurses leg ulcer clinic, and then treatment by nurse weekly. I am an international angler, and have captained the Scottish Fly Fishing Team, so am away from home frequently.. On 2 occasions I have removed very small pieces of what appeared to be yellowish/off white bone/gristle from the ulcers as they were not healing. One piece was sent to my doctor by the nurse. My follow up to the operation was in May 2017.  I was seen by a different Doctor at Wishaw General. They gave me a thorough examination including doppler and blood/pulse readings. The operation appeared to be a success with increased venus blood flow. They put me back into compression bandaging, which after 6 weeks had not made any difference, apart from two sores on my heel.   I then went back to wound dressings by the nurses.

I then went back to Wishaw and the doctor wanted to put me back to compression bandaging. I pointed out that there was a sharp tip at the edge of one of the small ulcers. They said it was crust. Due to the fact I would not submit to bandaging they seemed to lose interest and told me just to continue visiting the nurses treatment room. Later that night I took out another piece of sharp bone/gristle/cartilage with tweezers, from where I had indicated to her.   At clinic when the nurse sprayed water on one of the small ulcers, the water appeared to track and come out another close ulcer.   I am receiving dermovate cream and bacterial strip with wound dressing.   The nurses think the small pieces are from the operation.   Does anyone else appear to be having a similar problem getting the ulcers to heal.   What are the small pieces likely to be.   I have wanted to talk/tell someone about treatment, if feels like unless you go into compression bandaging no one wants to listen
