"Initially disappointing but the theatre..."

About: New Cross Hospital

What I liked

The consultant obstetrician, the anaesthetist and all of the theatre team in the delivery suite were superb. They were friendly, professional and inspired full confidence in their abilities. The ultimate in care was provided by them for the time of the Caesarean.

What could be improved

My wife was admitted first thing in the morning and shown to a side room. There were signs on entering the ward on the use of hand gel etc. and the importance of hygiene. The room was filthy. The floor was strewn with crisps, bottle-tops and small pieces of plastic toys. There were two used paper cups squashed in the mechanics of the bed and the yellow bin in the room had soiled rubbish in it. The suction canister on the wall had dust on it so thick that it must have been there for weeks. I complained about the state of the room and we were immediately moved to a different room. The explanation we were given was that the cleaner was on holiday. I hope it was not a long holiday.

Also, the reception/foyer of the building is very unwelcoming with its 'bullet-proof' glass. More akin to prison visiting than the welcoming environment one would like on a maternity unit.
