"Nothing was too much trouble at Woodend Hospital"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Orthopaedics Woodend Hospital / Elective Orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My dad recently had a hip replacement at Woodend Hospital Aberdeen.   He had an excellent surgeon, Dr Duthie and the care he received at Woodend Hospital from the Doctors, nurses and auxiliaries in ward 10 was second to none.   They were extremely thorough, friendly and treated my dad and the family with the utmost respect.   Nothing was too much trouble and he sang their praises from the minute he arrived.   I would like to thank them all for making this stressful experience easier.

The NHS get so much criticism but they do a sterling job considering the many obstacles they face.   Unfortunately he was transferred to Foresterhill due to complications.   Although ok, the care here was not nearly as good as Woodend and his discharge was lengthy with a mix up of tablets. I understand that it is a bigger hospital but he did not feel as informed as he did at Woodend, not seeing a Doctor very much during his time there.   Thankfully he is now home and doing well.

Dear wearefamily,

Thanks for sharing your story with us. The staff in ward 10 at Woodend will be delighted to hear that their care was second to none and I'm sure Dr Duthie will be very happy to receive a special mention too. The NHS does get some bad press but it sounds like everyone you encountered at Woodend did their best to deliver person centred care and I'm glad that helped your dad feel at ease at a stressful time.

I'm sorry the experience at ARI wasn't as good. Yes it is a bigger hospital but that doesn't excuse medication mistakes or not feeling informed. We strive to ensure each patient has all the information they need when they need it, but I can see this didn't happen for your dad.

We are currently working on ways to improve communication with patients in ward 212/213 and hope that if your dad has to visit again (fingers crossed he won't) things will have changed a little for the better.

I'll make sure your story is passed to all areas and staff mentioned.

I hope your dad is still recovering well.

Take care,

Kirsten
