"Poor communication and very long waiting list"

About: St George's Hospital (Tooting) (London)

I have first been referred by my GP in April 2016 for bariatric surgery assessment. Having had several consultation with Consultant, dietician, psychologist, I have finally been put on a surgery waiting list in March 2017. I have then been advised that waiting time is between 9 and 12 months (as opposed to 12 weeks as it was initially stated by the Consultant). I have called the Admissions in October to find out how far down the waiting list I am - and was told that I should not be calling - I will be contacted around 2 months before the surgery, so I should just wait patiently. So I waited. In mid-February, having received no calls, and planning to leave the country for 3 weeks, I called Admissions again - for an update and to make sure I wouldn’t miss the letter in case they sent it while I was away. And yet again they were unable to tell me when am I likely to get my surgery done, and that I should not be calling as they will contact me in due course. So now it’s mid-March, almost 2 years since the original referral was made. I still have not heard from the Admissions, and having received abrupt reply twice, not sure if there is any point in calling them. The question is - am I ever going to get this surgery done? I understand the pressure the NHS is under, and I am not expecting miracles; but surely being polite over the phone and providing information about estimated waiting times is not too much to ask for?!

Very disappointing experience, and leaves you hanging in midair with no possibility to plan the life ahead. I was left feeling upset and helpless, not knowing where else I could turn to for the information about waiting times.
