"Frustrating at times"

About: Springfield University Hospital (London)

(as a student nurse),

I have observed that care by different staff differs. I find that staff who have been on the profession for a very long period of time do not give the appropriate time to offer care to their patients. perhaps they have other tasks which need priority but I find that they offload tasks to do with patients or care for patients to newly qualified staff or to placement students.

A patient has told me that staff only have time for them 20% of the time whereas 80% is for admin/clerical work which I find has been the case.

Physical observations and knowledge for care has been impeccable but unfortunately it does not seem to be transferred to patients.

Learning environment- there isn't really one. in the MDT handover with the consultant, it is difficult to ask questions my understanding is its because the doctor has a set way of doing things and doesn't like to be interrupted- therefore we are asked to write down anything we don't understand and they'll be answered by my mentor afterwards. I don't think this fosters open communication and makes you feel as if you may be a bother.

Secondly my colleagues mentor consistently tells us that we don't have to have our essential skills signed off for this placement when we actually do. This worries me that some mentors do nor know the PAD as much as they should.

I have found it  difficult to shadow some of the nurses in charge when they are administering medication because they do things very fast and we are not mindful that this is something entirely new to us and we need to be taught properly. it has been frustrating at time because you feel like you are being bothersome when you just want to learn how to do things on a ward and be able to do them when on a proper shift.

Dear xrayzh54

My name is Farai and I am the Engagement & Experience Co-ordinator for the Trust.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback about your experiences as a student nurse in the Trust. I am saddened however, to read about your observations of other staff and their behavior towards our service users and the lack of learning opportunities from your placement.

I would like to reassure you of the Trust’s commitment to providing our patients with the best standards of mental health care, and I have passed this feedback to the placements team. If you would like this issues to be addressed further please can you kindly contact the Engagement & Experience Team on 0203 513 6150 or by email to complaints@swlstg.nhs.uk.

Kind regards

Farai
