"Great Staff!!!"

About: Huddersfield Royal Infirmary

What I liked

I was referred to the clinic to have a lower wisdom tooth removed. At my first appointment i was seen to rather quickly which i didn't expect as i know there is always some sort of delay. The dental surgeon talked me through my x-ray and explained exactly what they were going to be doing. At my second appointment i was incredily nervous but again seen to very quickly and the nurse calmed my nerves very well. i was still incredibly nervous as i knew the procedure involved cutting some gum open. The nurses and surgeon were very informative they talked me through every part of the surgery and reassured me even more when part way through there had to be drilling involved that wasn't expected. The aftercare advice was great. After a few days i began to get some intense pain in the extraction site and i called the department and asked if someone could take a look as i was worried it was infected, the nurse said i could go straight to the hospital and they squeezed me in very quickly which was a nice surprise i had expected to have to wait a while due to other patients appointments. my wound was cleaned and i was informed there was no problem it was just part of the healing but i was given an oil of cloves gauze which has helped immensely. never at any time was i made to feel like i was wasting time, the staff are brilliant very polite and helpful, which is more than can be said for the on call at Bradford who i was told to get in touch with if i had any problems (see improvement comments) all in all a rather nice experience for an unpleasant procedure!! Can't praise the staff enough. I'm having my other wisdom tooth out soon and any fears i had have already been erased as i know the staff will look after me!!

What could be improved

After having my tooth extracted i was told that if i needed urgent help out of hours then i was to ring the Bradford RI on call oral and Maxillofacial dentist. The night before i went back to huddersfield to have my wound checked i rang Bradford and he was an absolute disgrace he was abrupt and made me feel like i was taking up his time he also tried to fob me off as i wasn't a Bradford patient. The pain i was in was awful and this man made me feel 10 times worse, i did in the end ring NHS direct for advice and they were pleasant as always and said i may have Dry Socket which is a very painful secondary infection (i obviously later found out i didnt) but all i could do was take pain killers until been able to see someone the next day at huddersfield. Why the Bradford on call couldn't tell me all this i dont know. I know it has nothing to do with the Huddersfield staff but if huddersfield patients are told to contact Bradford and they then get treated like i did then i think the situation needs assessing. If you're in pain and worried and your told specifically to ring someone you get some respect and help from them which i got neither off.

Other than this i wouldn't change anything at huddersfield
