"Marie Curie stand"

About: Portishead Medical Group

I visited the practice today and was shocked to find a Marie Curie stand. The person at the stand was asking everyone on the way out "have you got a moment for Marie Curie?" Of course most people said yes, they then tried to get them to sign up for a monthly donation by direct debit!

People visit the doctors because they are unwell or to receive news about test results, which will leave some people very vulnerable. I dont expect to be harassed to sign money away when I go to the doctors, I feel that this is very inappropriate.

Thank you for your comments. We are aware of the sensitivities of asking patients if they would be willing to donate while in the surgery. We work with Marie Curie (and other charities) to ensure that a gentle approach is taken and that no one feels under any pressure to talk to them if they don't want to. This is a very valuable charity and they provide fantastic support to patients in Portishead so we are happy to support them, but we will take on board the comments that you have made and work with charities to make sure that any interaction with patients in the surgery is handled sensitively and appropriately.

Thank you
