I have sarcoidosis and I was worried that I was on medication unnecessarily and asked my GP if I could have a Vit D 1.25 test, or Parathyroid test. I had looked it up online and saw that I needed to go to Southend as only a few specialist hospitals do this procedure. The sample had to be put on ice immediately as it deteriorates very quickly (in some cases they have porters standing by to rush it to the nearest lab) and results for the test can take up to a month My GP gave me the form requesting the test but it was stamped to be carried out at Broomfield, so I questioned this. She told me they had always used Broomfield without a problem but I said I would telephone the hospital to confirm. I did and was told it was a normal walk-in test so last week I had the test. I mentioned to the phlebotomist about my query and he said it had not been done that way for 6-7 yrs and anyway they had no ice but the sample would go straight to the in-house lab. I suggested Southend Hospital should update their website if that was the case and he just shrugged.
Amazingly the following day I got my results back including the one which should have taken a month. I asked an ambassador for Sarcoidosis for her interpretation of the results and she has produced multiple medical references (JCEM, Labtestsonline, etc) to this test and guidelines as to how it should be carried out. It appears that the necessary procedure was not carried out at Broomfield and I will have to see my GP to arrange a further, correct testing at Southend Hospital. I find it hard to believe that this confusion exists in the present time. Both hospitals belong to the same Trust but there is apparently no coordination regarding at least, this specific blood test. How many patients have had a result which wasn't applicable to their condition? I appreciate that sarcoidosis is a rare little-known disease and we are frantically trying to spread awareness, but the test shouldn't be connected to the disease. It was a straightforward request for a specific test and apparently two hospitals, close geographically, have different procedures and one appears to not know about the 'correct' one carried out at the other.
"Special blood test"
