"Ran like clockwork during red snow warning."

About: Borders General Hospital / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

Colonoscopy treatment.

I had an appointment for the procedure and had taken the 'wonderful' prep drinks both on the day before and on the morning of my visit. What an experience!

THEN... a red snow warning from the Met Office and a foot of snow fell.  Should I attend or not?  Will the staff get to work or not?  I phoned in and was told that,  surprisingly, the clinic would still be running.  When I arrived everything worked like clockwork.  From the reception staff, to the nurses, I was kept informed of what was happening, although, in my opinion, much of the 'interview' seemed to be more about covering the back of the Health Board than a requirement prior to treatment.

The staffing levels seemed lower than I would have expected, apparently part due to many not getting to work because of the weather, but mainly to a lack of staff available generally.  The Doctor was great and when questioned answered all my questions as to what he was doing as he went along.  The screens televising my innards were really interesting and along with the commentary, made it an interesting experience overall.  A nice cup of tea and a great ham sandwich to finish.  All I need to do now is wait 3 - 4 weeks for the polyp results from the lab.

Great service, even if understaffed.  On the way out I heard that  the hospital had cancelled some 400 appointments tomorrow due to the Red snow and freezing conditions forecast for tomorrow. Damned if they do and damned if they don't!  The staff who turn up will be working on the wards to cover shortages there for looking after inpatients.

thank you for your comments - staff go to great lengths to ensure they can safely get to work - we are always conscious that we will be needed else where in the hospital, even if our own departments dont have any patients
