"Disgusted how Lister treat eldely care..."

About: Lister Hospital

What could be improved

I was appalled that my mother-an elderly and vulnerable lady, was brought into A & E, at 4-30am, on Friday 6th May, suffering from very severe back pain having fallen. I rang the unit at 09.00am to enquire how she was and what the plan was. I was advised to ring back-after the doctor had seen X-ray and informed she wasn't in pain. Ringing back later I was told that-despite the unit being told about lack of care at home ( only two visits am and late pm by carers) there was nothing hospital could do as my mother was ''mobilsing and not in pain''. On my Mother' arrival home I spoke to her. She then informed me she'd been given two injections of morphine ....hence ''not in pain'' and sent home. This is disgusting. This morning-in the early hours, she was taken back into A&E and this time admitted. My mother not having informed or rang her family-as felt woould be ''wasting time'' and disturbing us...when obviously, once the injections of morphine had worn off was in a lot of pain again-and on her own, in bed. What happened to ''duty of care'' by hospital.

Anything else?

Could have and should have-obviously, been admitted on the friday night/saturday morning when first atteded A & E,as was admitted today...not even 24 hours after being sent home. Seems to indicate need was there-rather than ''medicating her'' and sending her home...''sticking plaster'' approach!

You clearly are very unhappy at the care your mother received while at the Lister's A&E on Friday morning, prior to be admitted again today. We would very much want to have the matter investigated on your behalf, so we would welcome you getting in touch with us via the Trust's general enquiries e-mail service (generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net) so that we can get more details of what happened.

Should you wish us to investigate the issues involved, we will need to know your mother's full name, address and birth details; the dates and times when she was brought in to A&E would also be helpful (none of this information is available through the comments left on these pages).

At the very least, you and your mother deserve a full explanation of what happened and why. Should it transpire that our staff did not provide the sort of high quality care that we would expect, you will of course receive an apology as to what happened and the steps being taken to put matters right. Equally if there is information about your mother's treatment of which you are unaware, we'll make sure that this is shared with you too.
