About: North Manchester General Hospital

What I liked

I was admitted into North Manchester pre-natal unit on the 12th of February after my waters had broken a few days before my due date, I was very very ill from the 12th mainly being sick, at one point i was being sick every 30 mins which when i counted was nearly 48 times in one day! I felt awful and then my contractions started on the 13th. The staff on the pre natal ward were fantastic and gave me excellent care. The staff wanted me to be induced asap as my waters had broken and i was so sick and was becoming very weak unfortunately i was unable to go down to the labour ward as there was over 20 available bed but no midwives to deliver my baby also the midwife led unit which has been completed and is all ready to go can not be used due to cut backs? how can you build a new unit and then not staff it? this a complete waste. I was in labour on the pre-natal ward for three days constantly being sick and having contractions. After 3 long days i was taking to the labour ward and my little boy was born unfortunately my little boy had a perforation in his bowels and had to be rushed to MRI children's hospital where he was operated on. Later a blood test reviled that he also had ecoli which was passed on from me during the three days i was waiting to go down to the labour ward but couldn't because they had beds but no staff . He was now having to fight my infection as well as recovering from a major operation. The care the staff give at the maternity unit is amazing however having a midwife unit completed with NO staff and 20 available beds with NO staff due to cutbacks is unacceptable. I know the hospitals are merging but they haven't yet and until the extra staff are in place mummys to be will suffer.

What could be improved

Extra staff asap
