"My Time at Kilbryde Hospice"

About: Kilbryde Hospice / Day Services

(as the patient),

I was refered to kilbryde hospice around three months ago due to me having major surgery due to cancer. I was upset all the time crying day in and out wasnt coping very well due to having my bowel/bladder removed it was a very big shock to my system. All though I had family there who am very grateful to but just felt sometimes they didn't understand how I really felt deep down inside due to all that happen to me, am still trying to come to terms with it all. so when I was asked if I would like to be refered to the hospice was a bit unsure about it at first but now Ive been going it has helped me to start understanding the changes Ive had to make with my life.

The day services nurses are so caring and understanding and always there for you when you have your good days or bad ones, and the volunteers are brilliant to they all make you feel welcome the minute you walk through the doors. and in the day services room your greeted by all the nurses with smiles on their faces and cuddles all around honestly I cant thank them all enough for all there support and help to me and the other patients there great bunch of people.

I am now moving on to the next stage in the hospice which am looking forward to upwards and onwards as the saying goes. I hope this all makes sense if not sorry. but one thing I will say to anyone out there if you get refered to the hospice take it as they are one in a million at kilbryde hospice so not sure what else to say but love them all the nurses -karen, liz-anne, angela, ammajallea, charlene, rose. janince, vicky, lydsay, maryrose, jackie. my wee driver john, steven, martin, maureenf, and maureen i. and moira. and not forgetting the chef andrew. think ive rembered everyone so once again guys/gals love you all so much and thanks for being there for me and all the other patients to god bless you allxxxx

Dear angelface

Thank you very much for taking the time to post such an encouraging response following your attendance at Day Services at Kilbryde Hospice. I can imagine that the impact of your illness must have had an enormous effect on how you were feeling in yourself. I'm very pleased that Kilbryde Hospice staff and volunteers allowed you time to express your emotions and allow you to identify how you would manage the changes in your health and wellbeing in the future.

You mention all the staff and volunteers who work in Day Services including those who work to support the direct nursing care you receive. I'm delighted that you view them as part of the team because there are many aspects of our care that are invisible to some but not to you. As Clinical Services Manager I will feed back all of your comments to the staff and volunteers involved. This will make a positive difference to them.

You are now moving to another part of our Day Service... onwards and upwards you say! Our Day Service is for a short period with the understanding that that you have the skills to continue to manage your physical and emotional care yourself or you know who to contact if you need advice in the future.

I hope that as a result of reading this post our future patients and carers will not be unsure of a referral to Kilbryde Hospice and view it as a positive move rather than a set-back.

Margaret Mary Cowan

Clinical Services Manager
