"Had a terrible experience and hope to never be..."

About: Chase Farm Hospital / Cardiology

I had an echocardiogram  at Chase Farm Hospital recently and it was a terrible experience.  The lady who did it hardly acknowledged my existence, and ignored me apart from instructions.  The worst was her lack of sensitivity to the fact that I was lying on the chair exposed because the exam necessitated removing clothes for access to the chest. At one point she has to leave the cubicle for a few minutes and left the curtain open even though there were other people in the room, including another male patient.  I could not get up to close it because I was connected to the machine, and the hospital gown wouldn't close properly because of the wires and gel. I could  only ask her to close the curtian when she returned. Later she also called in a  male colleage to discuss something unrelated to my examination, and neither asked if I was fine with him coming in while I was half naked. I left feeling humiliated even to the point of assaulted. It was horrible, unprofessional and seems like staff could benefit greatly from sensitivity training. I would recommend future female  patients to go elsewhere for an echo.

Hello

I am very sorry for the time is has taken me to respond, I can only imagine how difficult the experience must have been and why you felt humiliated.

I have raised with the staff so they are aware of the impact of the actions you describe upon you and how you felt during your echocardiogram.

If you ever need to come to the hospital again I hope we have the opportunity at some point to show this was not how the care is ordinarily provided.

Kind Regards

Richard
