"I felt a lot more comfortable"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

This was my second termination, my first was at a clinic im England, where I was given all of the tablets on one day and sent home to have the termination on my own, I felt uncomfortable having it at home and was quite frightened with how much blood there was, I'd never experienced this before so it was quite scary.

This time around I felt a lot better, I had two appointments. The first appointment I had a scan where I found out i was 8 weeks and 2 days pregnant, the nurse spoke to me to make sure that this was the desicion I wanted to make, which it was. She made me feel very comfortable and explained thoroughly everything that was going to happen on the day of my termination. I had a vaginal swab done and blood taken to check for any STDs. Then I was given my first pill which stops the hormones and I was able to go home.

Two days later, on the day of the termination, I was taken into a room where my blood pressure and temperature was taken, then the nurse inserted the pills into my vagina (I think there was 4) and was given 2 other pills to take orally.   I was then shown to a room where there were other females who were going through the same treatment, I was a little disappointed that I wasn't in my own room as I would have rather had more privacy and been in my own company whilst the cramps and bleeding started, but I understand that it's difficult to accommodate for everyone.

The nurses were extremely helpful and constantly checking if we were ok, which makes you feel more comfortable in the situation you're in.

Overall, I have preferred being in the hospital whilst having my termination, i felt a lot more comfortable knowing that there are nurses just around the corner incase anything was to go wrong or if you have any immediate questions you would like to ask. It's nice to have the option to go home if you wish, but for my own comfort, I definitely preferred being where the professionals are.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear NS1795,

While these were two very different experiences I imagine these must both have been difficult times for you. I am glad that you found the recent one to be so much more helpful and supportive. Thank you so much for sharing a very personal story. I am sure the staff will be very pleased you felt this way about your recent visit.

Best wishes,

Eunice
